Though no amount of bicep curls or squats will prepare you for the joy in your heart and the burn in your muscles of staying up all night cradling your newborn, exercising intensely NOW and eating healthfully will give you the strength and stamina you will need from the first instant you become a father. If your goal, and I hope it is, is to be a rock and a hero to your wife and your baby, then you must get strong, stay strong and take care of yourself. You will be called upon to act in situations from which you have no experience. You will need a clear head, a strong back and a lovingheart to fulfill your call to duty!

     Your joyous news needs to be a starting bell for you. It should be ALL the motivation you need to make whatever changes are necessary.

 Nutrition

Take a look at your eating habits and if you must dramatically overhaul your diet, do so now. Work together with your wife to develop a diet high in vegetables and fruits. You can be inspiration for her, and she for you.

Also- if you don’t cook, start to learn now. Your wife will need your help. (Learn to wash dishes and load the dishwasher as well!) Begin with very simple meals and then take a few chances with more involved dishes. Be creative and have fun doing this. In a few years you’ll be making Saturday night pizza for a house full of kids.

 Wellness

Yes, this is most definitely a time to celebrate, but not too much nor too often. Take a look at your alcohol consumption. Do you get tipsy on weekends? Can’t happen now. You need to be in total control at all times, ready for anything, including an emergency.

 Smoking. Quit.

 Sleep. Get it now my friend. We’re serious.

 Stress Take steps to control and manage it. As your wife’s pregnancy advances, the intensity level in your household goes up a notch each month. When the baby arrives, it goes ballistic. Stay calm, stay grounded and stay grateful for your miracle.

 EXERCISE

Now is the time to get yourself into the best shape of your life. Muscle groups will be strained to levels not seen since high school football. Your arms, shoulders, legs and lower back will be tested to extreme levels of endurance. Wondering how heavy a seven pound baby can be? Wait and see!!
